Summer's no Bummer for BCM Up & Comers

Tuesday, July 20, 2010

It seems like there's a lot of bad news in the news these days so let's try and turn those clown frowns upside-down with good news news.

Inward Eye are doing the demo thing with Dave Sardy - the dude who produced Jet, Wolfmother, Slayer, Johnny Cash and a whole bunch of other smashing acts. So there...right off the top...good news.

And Sons of York are recording in New York with Gus van Go (The Stills, Priestess, Hollerado) while AM Glory are completing demos for major US labels. So once again; more good news. How 'bout that?

Finally, mix-monster to superstars Tom Lord-Alge is mixing the Ash Koley record which we think can most definitely be filed in the good news category as can the fact that the band will be performing at the final Lillithfair2010 show in Toronto on July 24.

Now after all that how can you accuse us of being anything but the messengers of good news news? Ya can't. Impossible. See ya next time!

Ground Control to Ash Koley

Commencing countdown, engines on!

Ash Koley are having the time of their life now that they've started to perform the music that the dynamic duo have been working on over the last couple of years to live audiences.

And is there a better place for them to do it than at the long-awaited return of Lillith2010?

Think not.

Calgary Review Snippet:

Winnipeg duo Ash Koley performed an infectious set of pop tunes, the highlight of which was their new single Don't Let Your Feet Touch

Ground.

After the song ended, lead singer and band namesake Ash Koley beamed out at the crowd in a rock star kind of euphoria one rarely encounters on mainstages these days.

"You just made one of my dreams come true," she said. "I always wanted to look out into the crowd and see people singing along to one of my songs, and it just happened." (the Calgary Herald)

And you can bet It won't be the last time.

Sarah McLachlin's first class travelling all-female music festival is back and, hey, do yourself a favor - don't miss it.

With acts including Sheryl Crow, Erykah Badu and Sarah herself, it's sorta like that sweet summer Orangesicle that melts in your mouth and leaves you wanting more.

Sweethearts of the Radio!

Ash Koley are spreading the word about Manitoba music all over Canada!  And with a UK release imminent, music lovers across the pond are next on the hit-list.

Up against major competition from long-established stars such as Christina Aguilera, John Mayer, Usher, Ke$ha and Our Lady Peace, Winnipeg band Ash Koley's single Don't Let Your Feet Touch Ground had a super-happy fantastic first week on Canadian radio!

The single was added to the playlists of major stations in Montreal, Winnipeg, Victoria, Ottawa, Vancouver and many smaller markets, as well as getting played on ten CBC Radio One and Radio Two shows.

The band's label (Nettwerk/Sony) decided to release Don't Let Your Feet Touch Ground after the song developed a groundswell of popularity from exposure on the current Lotto 649 Canada TV ad, feature performances on the U.S. version of So You Think You Can Dance, The 2010 Olympics and YouTube viral videos such as the flash mobs staged during the Olympics in downtown Vancouver. And the group's quirky & quaint "Bathroom Series" of homemade videos are a fan favorite; letting the viewer hear new songs in an uniquely intimate style.

The Good, The Good & The Ugly

The Good: Look for Ash Koley to let their feet touch ground next year when they hit the Lillithfair stage as it travels from town to town. The hugely successful musicfest is back in 2010 and looks to be bigger and better than ever with Mary J. Blige, Sheryl Crow, Metric and others in the initial line-up with even more TBA.

More Good: Inward Eye continue to rock the free world with not one, but two songs on the "Galaxie Rock Top 50 Most Played Songs of 2009" list. Excellent news as the year comes to an end.

Now The Ugly: Cowardly weasel-thieves broke into Inward Eye's van in Philadelphia last week and made off with guitars and other assorted gear. Philadelphia...where's the soul, dude?

SOY CD Packs Healthy Punch

Sons of York are starting to see all that hard work pay off with great reviews pouring in for their debut CD Black & White Summer :

"The debut album by power pop trio Sons of York is a raucous collection of songs about first loves and fist fights, sprinkled with gang vocals, handclaps and catchy choruses. (It's clear that the brothers Kennerd - Luke, Jake and Cody - like The Beach Boys and The Strokes.) Boisterous numbers such as the title track and I Ain't Been The Same Since They Cut My Brother Down crackle with youthful rock 'n' roll energy, while Twice the Fool hints at a more mature sound. Sure, the lyrics stay squeaky clean (see: Running Home to River Heights), but the wide-eyed innocence works here - at its core, this is a record about growing up." - Uptown Magazine

The boys are keeping busy through the chilly season playing as many gigs as they can squeeze in before Santa falls down your chimney, drinks all your booze and hits on your wife.

Mall Cats

Don't Let Your Feet Touch Ground, that infectious Ash Koley tune you've been hearing on the Lotto 649 commercials all summer, is about to reach a lot more ears. DMX, a company that programs music for retail stores and malls, has added the tune to their playlist all over North America.

Here's just a few of the places you can hear it: DKNY, Victoria's Secret, Urban Alternative and Tommy Hilfiger.

But that's just the tip of the ice bag...it's gonna be everywhere!

IE Reviews Rock

The reviews for the Inward Eye EP are starting to come in and they've been great.

The bands' video for "Shame" has also been picked as the "Buzz" video of the week on Much Music.

Here's a sample of some early reviews:

CHARTtrack:

Inward Eye's "Shame" by Edward Skira (Chart Attack)

"It took Winnipeg's Inward Eye years to record and release their debut self-titled EP, which was released on Jan. 27. But the wait was worth it, as the EP's leadoff track, "Shame," proves. The tension-filled track is as much influenced by The Who as it is modern indie rock, and it's a welcome respite from some of the tired, recycled alternative rock that currently sits atop the charts."

About.com: Punk Music

"Made up of three brothers from Manitoba, Inward Eye is a band that owes as much to the heavy swagger of bands like the Rolling Stones as they do their punk influences. As a result, their sound is both overblown and snot-nosed, urging you to pump your fist and swing your hips at the same time, and sounding good on the stereos of rockers and punks alike (as long as it’s played at the proper volume, of course)."

Ryan Cooper is a Detroit-based music journalist who has been covering and commenting on the punk scene in one medium or another since 1989.

Juno Nomination Time

They're all winners in the end, aren't they?

Winnipeg recording artist Tracy Bone picked up a nomination for her 2008 debut CD No Lies in the Aboriginal Album of the Year category.

Is there a BCM connection here?

Well, glad you asked because parallel parking enthusiast and musical cohort to rising stars Phil Deschambault was in the producer's chair for this one.

Nice work Phil, you've earned a vacation...ok, it's over now.

Inward Eye Release EP

BCM is thrilled to announce that Inward Eye are set to release their Sony Records debut EP in Canada on January 27, 2009. The self-titled EP will be available at all music retailers and on-line...you can even get it right here at the brand spankin' new Burning Circus Management website!

The lead-off track "Shame" was serviced to Canadian rock and modern rock stations on Monday, January 19th. The song started as a straight-up guitar riff and morphed into a snotty shuffle with yelped vocals.

"It was too high for me to sing in a regular voice," explains Dave. "It sounded like the theme to Psycho. We were like, that can be a hook! Lyrically, I felt like there was a lot of problems around me, and a lack of justice."

The video for "Shame" is set for an early February delivery and was created by renowned animation specialist Rémy M. Larochelle.

Check back often for tour dates and other exclusive news on all of the artists right here on the BCM site!
